Ever thought about designing and building yourself a mansion, with some equally beautiful gardens?
Well, Sir Walter Scott did. And now we have him to thank for one of our Top 10 Things we Love, Abbotsford House.
Open to the public you can drop in and visit the writer’s house and see how Walter Scott designed and decorated the stately home. You’ll find it about 20 miles away toward Melrose, and the beautiful gardens are a must see in summer.
When you enter the house you’ll be kitted up with an audio tour headset. An actor playing Scott will be on the end of the wire to tell you all about the grand surroundings and artefacts in detail. It really brings the whole experience to life and bounces you back in time. Oh the days!
The house overlooks the River Tweed, so it’s in a beautiful setting, not to mention the gardens. They form three different outdoor rooms designed to offer picturesque settings for the main house. You’ll walk among Scott’s inspiration for his books.
There’s also an exhibition with lots of Scott’s works to marvel at after you’ve visited the house where you can pick up a little bit of history. The visitor centre has its own gift shop where you can pick up a souvenir from your day trip in the Scottish Borders, and you can grab something to eat while you gaze out the window at the beautiful old house.
